In 1996 our 3rd generation family HVAC business was 45 years old and we were still experiencing the winter slow periods with replacement sales starting about mid December and lasting until nearly spring sometimes. It just amazed me that we could be so busy during the hot summers and sell so many replacement systems because the cooling system failed and then along comes winter and the furnaces were hardly ever failing to the point that they dictated system replacement. We would typically find 2 or 3 furnaces a year with bad heat exchangers because we didn’t know there was a reason to look farther than our fingers and small mirrors would take us. I started cutting apart and documenting with high quality digital photos every single furnace by model and serial number that we removed for any reason over the next 2 years. I found patterns of failure on many heat exchanger designs and put together a training program for our 16 techs. We started out using long stick mirrors with water spray and did quite well but knew we could do better if we had a better way to see inside the heat exchangers. I found the Inspector camera from Shamrock Industries and ordered one. My American Standard and Carrier distributors were in awe over the replacement sales we were experiencing when their other dealers were sitting around waiting for the phone to ring. I showed them what I had documented and the training/advertising program that I had put together for our business and they immediately convinced me to start Furnace Safety Consultants to train their dealers over a 5 state area. I am very passionate about this subject and teach no room for error methods. Since training over 1200 technicians on how to find failed heat exchangers and showing owners what kinds of marketing really build business, many of these companies are having record sales every month. Today we have the Inspector cameras on all of our service trucks and that combined with the training from Furnace Safety Consultants allowed us to increase our gross average yearly replacement sales by $800,000. My technicians loved all three improvements on the new Inspector and recognized each one without being told about them. They saw right away that the picture of the inside of the furnace was brighter and much sharper too. They also loved the smaller camera head size and were able to reach further into tight spaces. We had sent our existing Inspectors in to be upgraded to the new Model 400 RED HEAD, and we bought two new RED HEAD Inspectors as well. Just wanted to let you know how pleased we are with our Inspector. We have implemented the use of this tremendous system, and have been amazed to find that some furnaces, which are only 3 to 5 years old, have major cracks in the primary heat exchanger, necessitating that the heat exchanger be replaced. We have 6 of The Inspector units and they have generated enough work to keep 2 of my 5 installers busy this past winter, while my competitor's trucks were parked at their shop.
Needless to say, we are now working on using these systems during summer on air conditioning systems to generate more service and replacement work in that area as well. We're very grateful for what the Inspector has done for us.
